Nearly a decade after the anime’s initial release, fans are still waiting for the renewal of Future Diary Season 2. Even though the series is popular enough, Studio Asread has not planned to produce a sequel. Well, rumors say that the studio has already canceled Mirai Nikki Season 2. However, any official sources have not verified the speculation. So, what is the future of the anime? Will it ever return? Here are all the details you need to know.
Mirai Nikki, popularly known as Future Diary, was initially an immensely famous manga series written and illustrated by Sakae Esuno. It was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Shounen Ace magazine for twelve volumes between January 2006 and December 2010. Due to the LN series’s popularity, Studio Asread picked up the story for an anime adaptation. The television anime aired around Japan between October 2011 and April 2012.
Is Future Diary Season 2 Canceled?
Some recent rumors about the cancelation of Mirai Nikki Season 2 broke many fans’ hearts. However, it is important to note that Studio Asread or any other company related to the anime’s production has neither canceled nor renewed the sequel. Yet, despite heavy demands, the chances for the return of the anime are relatively low. Well, the main reason why there won’t be a sequel is that the story is already complete.
A lot of Future Diary fans are not aware that the story of the anime is already complete. Well, since many viewers have not watched the OVA episode, they still think that they need more seasons. The first installment ended on a cliffhanger and left its audience unsatisfied. However, the studio released an OVA episode back in June 2013. The episode resolved the cliffhanger of Season 1’s finale and wrapped up the entire story.
Hence, since the anime’s story is already complete, the creators do not necessarily need to renew Future Diary Season 2. However, if enough fans still want another season, the studio might think of producing it.
Is There Enough Source Material For Mirai Nikki Season 2?
Unfortunately, there is not enough content for a new Mirai Nikki installment. The first season covered almost all twelve manga volumes. Moreover, the remaining plot was adapted into the 2013 OVA episode. Hence, Studio Asread now has no source material left for Future Diary Season 2. There will be hope for a sequel only if mangaka Sakae Esuno writes more manga volumes.
Future Diary Season 2: Release Date
Studio Asread is yet to renew the second season, so it’s currently hard to predict a release date. However, if the studio decides to produce a sequel or a reboot series, it might take a few years to premiere. Hence, any new episodes of Mirai Nikki Season 2 may not hit the screens anytime before late 2022 or early 2023. We will update this article once the official date is announced.
