She has made peace with the fact that she cannot stop unseeing the ghosts around her. However, the last remaining conflict of the story is the cat-killer. Miko and Zen have still not located the man who is killing all the cats.
But it could also be true that Zen’s mother was the one who was taking away all the cats so that her son would not withdraw from her memory. The penultimate episode, ‘She Looks,’ opened with a flashback sequence telling Zen’s back story. It is revealed that his mother was a possessive woman. Cut to the present, Miko was plotting to get Zen disbanded from the school so that he could get away from the spirit. Later on, she spotted Zen trying to catch a cat on the roadside. However, he was unsuccessful in doing so. Another past sequence played displayed Zen crying over the death of a cat that his mother had killed.
In the present, Zen tells Miko that he was hunting down the man who was killing all the cats in his neighborhood. When Miko meets with Satoru, Zen’s childhood friend, she learns about his traumatizing past. Thus, she concluded that the ghost following him was, in fact, his mother. Towards the end of the episode, Miko mocked the ghost into attacking her. As a result of this, the maiden came to save her. This way, Zen was freed from the lurking ghost of his mother.
