Artist duo Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata are esteemed figures of the manga industry. So, when the creators of Death Note announced their next project, fans could not wait to see what was coming to the table. The final product was Platinum End, a supernatural thriller that dealt with angels, demons, and gods. It is still a debatable topic the first season was a good adaptation or not. Besides the reception, the continuation update of the anime also has complicated things further. Hence, to clear the air around the return of Platinum End Season 2, here is a brief look at the story so far.

Platinum End anime draws its story from the dark fantasy manga of the same name. Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata are the creators of the text. In a considerably short run, the manga serialized fourteen volumes between 2015 and 2021. The first season was announced in December 2020 with the launch of the anime’s domain. The first episode came out in October 2021. And now, questions of a sequel are circling the makers day in and out. Keep reading further to find out more about the return of Platinum End.

Is There Enough Source Material?

The question of source material gets subject in terms of the season. At the time when the first season was airing, Twitter handle Manga Mogura RE revealed that Platinum End anime would adapt the entire story of the manga. Soon enough, the makers also stamped the news official with the release of its thirteenth episode. Thus, it was evident that the anime would finish within twenty-four episodes.

So, Platinum End Season 2 does not have enough source material to commence another season. Much like Death Note, the series is planning to end with an open question or a cliffhanger. This suggests that the chances of getting a second season are quite low.

Platinum End Season 2: Renewal Status

In the initial announcement of the anime, it was not mentioned if the series would be split-cour. However, as the season reached the concluding part, the makers announced that it would be continuing with the 13th episode. Thus, Season 1 is set to get twenty-four episodes. It was also mentioned that there would not be a break between the two parts. Hence, at the time of writing, Platinum End continues with Part 2 of the story.

As for the second season, it is safe to say that there would not be a sequel to the series. Much of the credit for the decision goes to the lack of source material. In fact, the makers had already clarified that they plan to adapt the entire story in numbered episodes. On more theory that fans are hoping to be true ceases the reception.

Some Redditors and fan threads suggest that the second cour of the series was originally slated to release as Platinum End Season 2. But when the first season went downhill in terms of reception, the idea was pulled back. Thus, makers decided to get done with the project instead of dragging it for one more season.

Platinum End Season 2: Production Details

Signal.MD animation company has worked on the production and animation of the first part. The second cour is also being animated by the same company. Manga Mogura RE, a Twitter page that is known to give some of the most trustable pieces of anime news, had more insight on the matter. The leak page confirmed that Platinum End will continue to air until March 2022 with the remaining episodes. With almost three months to reach the conclusion, it can be assumed that Platinum End Season 2/Part 2 is currently going through animation work.

The first part ended up becoming an execution disaster. Thus, it is highly likely that Signal.MD would want to change up the errors that arose in the first part. However, there is no official update from the side of the makers as of yet.

Controversies!

Besides the availability of source material, one more factor that affects the return of any series is the reception. Right from the second week, Platinum End was showered with criticisms for its insincere adaptation. Most of the screenplay tended to deviate from the source material. And thus, fans lost interest in continuing with the series. A number of ranking platforms have named the series as the worst anime of 2021. Most of the criticism comes from the fact that the creators of Death Note had brought this to the table.

The same was reflected in the official numbers garnered by the season. The MyAnimeList score of the first part is as low as 6.7. On IMDb, fans gave a 7.5-star rating to the series, which would be considered ideal for a renewal. However, judging by the adaptation so far, it is highly unlikely that the anime can come back to the screens after the conclusion.

Platinum End Season 2: Release Date

Platinum End Season 2 already has a small cap for release. While it is almost confirmed that the series is not returning, fans might expect projects like stage-play and live-action to be announced. But judging by the reception of the first Part, it is unlikely that the project has a future beyond the anime adaptation. Even though, if such projects ever see the light of the day, they will only see an announcement after the March 2022 conclusion of the anime.
