Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese supernatural dark fantasy anime TV series. It is an adaptation of Sui Ishida’s manga series of the same name. Studio Pierrot animated all four installments of this show. The anime first came out on July 4, 2014. The viewers became its fans just after listening to its opening theme (Unravel). Its debut season was a grand hit, and hence the animation studio renewed it for further installments. Its most recent and fourth season premiered on October 9, 2018, and ended after running for twelve episodes on December 25 of the same year.

Manga Compared To The Anime
Sui Ishida, the man behind this critically acclaimed manga, began its serialization on September 8, 2011. He concluded its storyline after releasing 14 volumes in 2014. In the same year, Pierrot came up with the first season of this dark fantasy thriller series. Its first season faithfully followed the manga series, and hence it received a great response from everyone.
However, the second season (Root A) deviated away from the manga series. Most of the content it featured was an anime original. Not only that, but it wasn’t even a canon for the third installment of the anime. From the third season (Re) onwards, the studio began to adopt content from the manga again. However, this time they rushed its storyline. They covered two-thirds of the manga series in only two seasons, which was twelve episodes long.
The fourth season (Re second season) exhausted all the content and ended on the manga’s last chapter. As a result, after the run of this show, Pierrot had nothing left to create Tokyo Ghoul Season 5. Only the debut season followed the manga series faithfully. That is the main reason why the fans of Sui Ishida’s work still demand a faithful anime adaptation.

Tokyo Ghoul Season 5: Renewal Status
Tokyo Ghoul has the potential to be a masterpiece. However, it ended up getting nowhere near this tag. Its first installment was one of the most successful anime seasons of all time. It managed to get a brilliant score of 7.80 on MyAnimeList. Not only that, but it has more than 2.3M members in its MAL group and is ranked at #7 popularity. However, after the first run, its ratings reduced drastically. Its fourth season has a below-average score of 6.38 on the same platform.
The third and the fourth season received a highly negative response from everyone. The manga readers stated that Pierrot ruined a great manga. They used a total of 179 chapters to create the last 24 episodes of the anime. It clearly reveals how rushed its storyline was. Moreover, by increasing the pacing of the series, the makers exhausted all the source material as well.
Now, they have nothing to make Tokyo Ghoul Season 5 even if they want to. Since the show is ten of the most popular titles on MAL, it goes without saying that the demand to see its fifth season is very high. Some fans even signed petitions for the officials to renew its fifth installment, but it didn’t help. Unfortunately, the anime is yet to get a green light, and the chances of this happening are very low.

Will The Anime Return?
Four seasons were not enough to fulfill the craving of Tokyo Ghoul fans. They want to see the fifth season as well because they hope that the next installment might set things right. But the main issue is that the second season of RE ended on a pretty conclusive note. Also, the officials are in no mood to extend its plot any further. Sui Ishida will certainly not return to write a rough storyline as he is busy with his new manga series. The manga readers also think that if Pierrot extends the plot, it will only ruin the series more.
Hence, the probability for Tokyo Ghoul Season 5 to take place is almost zero. However, one thing is certainly possible. Millions of fans are demanding to see a reboot of this dark fantasy thriller. The fans have already seen reboots like Hunter x Hunter and Berserk that performed better than the original series. Therefore, the chances are great that some other studio might pick it up in the near future and make a faithful anime adaptation of the Tokyo Ghoul.

Sui Ishida’s New Project
Earlier this year, the author of Tokyo Ghoul started a new manga series titled Choujin X. Its serialization began in May this year. This series also fall under the same genre as a supernatural action thriller. Its initial chapters received a great reception from the readers, and they think it has the potential to cross the popularity of Choujin X in the near future. Its story follows a boy named Azuma Higashi. He has great fighting skills, along with a good sense of justice. However, Azuma has a friend named Tokio, who is the complete opposite of him.
They live in Yamato, but unfortunately, Choujins destroyed this place. They are beings with supernatural abilities. In order to fight the Choujins, Azuma and Tokio decided to become Choujin themselves.

Tokyo Ghoul Season 5: Release Date
As we previously mentioned, the fifth season of this dark fantasy thriller is no longer in the cards. Therefore, the fans shouldn’t raise their hopes very high to see Tokyo Ghoul Season 5. However, the chances are very good that its reboot will take place in the near future. So, if any other studio picks it up in the upcoming years, the Tokyo Ghoul Reboot might return sometime in 2024.
