The Death Note manga came out in 2006. Writer and illustrator duo Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata are the original creators of the story. The story of Shinigami’s Notebook was later adapted as an anime series by Studio Madhouse. Later, the franchise saw two manga sequels, one novel series, and two feature films. The August 2007 film, Vision of a God was perceived to be the continuation of the original plot. But the franchise never saw a sequel anime.

Death Note Season 2: Renewal Status!
For now, the renewal of Death Note Season 2 is still pending. Neither the authors of the manga nor Studio Madhouse have given any solid statement regarding the show’s renewal. On the flip side, the makers have not denied the renewal of the sequel either. In February 2020, writer duo Tsugumi and Takeshi came out with a continuation of the story, Death Note One Shot Manga.
Since then, the news of a sequel series has gained much traction. But Studio Madhouse has a reputation for coming up with late sequels. Thus, it is only a matter of time before the renewal is announced.
What Will Be Plot?
Since Death Note One Shot Manga is the direct continuation of the story of the pilot manga, Death Note Season 2 will adapt the storyline from this manga itself. The A-Kira Story delves into the regular life of high schooler Minoru Tanaka. Years have passed since the death of Kira. But Japan is still struggling with the trauma of history’s largest mass murder. But the quirky Ryuk is once again on Earth with his killing notebook.
Now, Minoru Tanaka will take up the job to serve justice to the people of Japan. Much like the predecessor part, this one also tells the story of a high schooler who comes across a strange Shinigami object. But Minoru has survived the era of Kira, and he knows the ways of the authorities. The new protagonist will not repeat the mistakes that Kira made. This will make him an even greater threat to humanity than Yagami Light.
Death Note Season 2: Release Date
Judging by the renewal status of the sequel, the chances of Death Note Season 2 releasing this year are very low. If the show undergoes production this year itself, we can find a release date by late 2022 or early 2023 at the earliest. Nonetheless, the chances of the sequel going into production still remain in an indeterminant state. So, fans must keep their expectations low for two years at the least.
