Previous Season Recap!
Much like all isekai stories, the first season of Slime Isekai told the story of the transfer of an ordinary protagonist to a new world. Mikami Satoru is a seemingly normal boy who is bored with his life. With a boring job and a leisurely lifestyle. But everything changed when he was summoned to a new world. But after the reincarnation, he is born as a slime. Thus, the adventurous life of a slime warrior began.
The second season had a setup for a more adventurous story to come. The second season dealt with the clash of the Rimuru and Clayman. In the fight to become the ultimate demon lord, Rimuru came face-to-face with the most dangerous man alive. Season 2 picked up many political storylines from the original text. Towards the end of the season, in chapter ‘Octagram,’ the fate of the Demon Lord finally unrolled. In an action-packed concluding fight, Clayman fell, making Rimuru the new Demon Lord.
What To Expect From TenSura Season 3?
The thread of predictions has become a mess of events after the announcement of the new movie. In the official uncovering of the movie project, it was revealed that the film would continue the story of the existing anime. For the time being, fans strongly believe that the movie will follow up on the events of the second season. Then, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 3 will follow up the plot left up in the film.
The next season will likely follow the plot from the seventh volume of the light novel. Either Season 3 or the movie would continue the following storyline. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 3: Is There Enough Source Material?
The anime adaptation That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime does not follow the conventional chronology. Since the first cour of the pilot season, the adaption departed from materializing the story in its original order. So, the first season (twenty-five episodes) ended up using the first 52 chapters of the manga. As the story progressed to the second season, many manga chapters were skipped in order to reach a certain point in the story.
Thus, the second season ended up becoming more for a compilation story than an adaptation. Many episodes of the second season include bits from before Chapter 52 in the manga. There are parts from Chapters 40 and 41 from the text. By the eleventh episode, the story reached the 71st chapter of the manga. Then, the second cour began from the 74th chapter. At the time of writing, the manga has come out with 82 chapters.
But since the story is still ongoing both in the light novel and the manga, there will be more than enough source material for the next season. However, the chronology cannot be assumed since the anime is not a sincere adaptation of the text.
Will The Anime Ever Return?
Two factors come into play when the future of the anime is considered- reception and source material. The future of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime depends more or less on the reception of its third season. The first two seasons of the banner have performed exceptionally well on the ranking charts. So, there is a lesser chance that the third installment would go otherwise. The partnership of 8 Bit Studio and writer Kazuyuki Fudeyasu has brought out the best of the story.
On the other hand, the source material is also not a hindering factor. Besides the original manga, there are two other manga series that are running under the umbrella of spin-offs. Moreover, after the announcement of the new movie, the franchise has been opened up to a plethora of possible projects. With countless story arcs, it is safe to say that That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 3 is not the last of the franchise that the fans will see.
That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 3: Release Date
The new movie of TenSura is slated for a Fall 2022 release. This means that the studio would have its hands full until the summer of next year. Only after that, the animation company would get a chance to work on the third season. Even if the studio manages to animate the project in a year’s time, there is no hope that the fans can get Season 3 before 2023.
